How long does camp last? Exact dates vary by camp, but most summer seasons begin in late May or early June and run through mid-to-late August. Camp sessions vary from a weekend to two weeks in length; however, most camp sessions are 1 week long. All staff are given some time off throughout summer (specific schedules will vary from camp to camp). Each camp will begin summer with a staff orientation and training. Accommodations for working less than the entire season can sometimes be arranged.
How will I get there? You are responsible for getting to and from camp at the beginning and end of the season. Most camps can arrange to pick you up or drop you off at a nearby airport, bus or train station.
Why should I apply? Camp is an amazing opportunity to experience new things, take on new challenges and responsibilities, and grow in faith. There are opportunities to develop new skills and relationships. You will be a part of a summer staff - made up of your peers - growing in faith, committed to service and supporting one another. Most of all, you will share the love of Christ with the campers you serve. You will be used by God’s Spirit as a vehicle for sharing the faith He has given you. This will happen not by anything you do, but by what He does through you.

What does a camp staff person do? Primarily, summer staff seek to share the gospel with campers. At the same time, they do everything from cleaning the dining hall to leading hikes, from leading Bible studies to teaching archery. Camp staff, through all the activities and adventures that make up camp, are constantly looking for opportunities to connect kids to Christ.
What jobs are available? Summer counselors are hired at every NLOMA camp and take responsibility for a group of campers during each camp session. Other roles at camp may include kitchen help, maintenance, office assistant, horse wrangler, arts and crafts instructor, lifeguard and medic. Throughout the summer, all camp staff work with campers, taking a lead in activities and being responsible for camper safety. Each role is important, and each person on a summer staff contributes greatly to the ministry of camp.
How much money will I make? All of the NLOMA camps provide room and board for summer staff. In addition, salaries are provided which will vary from camp to camp. If there is a certain amount of money you need to make you can let a NLOMA representative know this in an interview. This will be shared with camps considering your application.
Do I have to be Lutheran to work at a Lutheran camp? Each camp may have different staffing policies in relation to this question. In general, the answer is “no”. With that said, NLOMA is comprised of Lutheran camps, which means that the expression of faith at each of these camps will be Lutheran in nature. You should be comfortable as a member of this community. A NLOMA representative can help you with more specific questions.
How old do I need to be? Most camps look for summer staff who are at least 18 years old and/or have finished one year of college. Some positions, such as those requiring driving camp vehicles or off-site trips, may require staff to be 21 or older. Some camps hire younger staff, but it is recommended that you contact individual camps if you are under 18.
